Wine - Asian Food Series #4: two eclectic reds – Petite Syrah and Zinfandel

Sriracha.buzz | April 20, 2015
It's Monday and time to talk about wine! In the fourth chapter of our series on Wine and Asian Food we take on two “very” California wines, the powerful lush Zinfandel and the spicy, inky, tannic Petite Syrah. Shinsei has exceptional examples of each: the Frog’s Leap, Zinfandel, Napa Valley and the Coquerel, Petite Syrah, Napa Valley.

About the Grapes

Zinfandel is California's flagship grape, like Sangiovese is to Italy and Malbec to Argentina. An important note about  Zinfandel is though it can age, the fruity yet strong flavors are best enjoyed young. Few other wines in the world share this distinction.

Petite Syrah is actually only called Petite Sirah / Syrah in the US and Israel. Elsewhere, it is referred to as Durif. Related to Syrah, it shares the same spiciness, but has much more tannin. California and Australia are the leading producers of this grape that originated in France.

Food Pairings

The dark fruit, spiced aromas and flavors of these wines make delicious flavor combinations with Shinsei’s citrus-marinated beef tenderloin or our honey hoisin baby back ribs. The moderate- to medium-tannin structure of these wines will stand up to Asian chili seasonings and fatty, charred meats, yet the roundness and fruitiness enhances, rather than fights, the hot spices. Whenever there is a presence of peppercorns, some vinegary zest, or slightly hot garlic, chile, and gingery sensations, a zesty, peppery, fruity Zinfandel or Petite Syrah finds surprising dance partner.

Of course, you should select and drink the wines that make you happy.

Remember, Mondays at Shinsei is “wine o’clock” with 1/2 price bottles from 5p – 10p. Come share the journey and a bottle or two with family and friends. [ reserve your table at Shinsei ]

From our list / Tasting Notes.

Frog’s Leap, Zinfandel, Napa Valley
A Zinfandel that draws its power from sophistication instead of raw alcohol content. The aromatics of this classic field blend that include Petite Sirah and Carignane present a delightful challenge to the nose. Like a bunch of summer fruit all conserved together in one aromatic package.

Coquerel, Petite Syrah, Napa Valley
A Petite Sirah that has an inky color, a nose of blackberry fruit with spicy notes, a creamy mid pallet with big tannins, and a long red fruit and licorice finish.
